By I was recently talking with a writer friend about the different types of debate polls that you see in the news or on the Internet and the different options available for them. I told him that I often use these polls and I was blown away by his response. He told me that he had been involved in some debate polls that were done in the 60’s.
In the 60s, the format of the polls was very much along the lines that most of us have seen in the news, with a question and a set of answers. However, in those polls, the questions were often very simplistic, for example, asking people to list a few of their favorite movies from the last week.
This is different. These polls asked folks to choose among 30 answers, each one from one of 30 different movies. It was a very different format. I found that the more I talked about the format of these polls, the more they changed. One of my favorite polls was a debate I had in high school. In the middle of the debate, I was asked to tell the audience who I thought was the best actor in the world.
I’ve since learned that the format of these polls is not ideal, but it’s a start, and it’s worth trying.
The problem is, if you are going to ask a bunch of people to rate a bunch of movies, its very possible that you will get different answers for different people. Even if the answers are evenly split, it can still be very difficult to form a full picture. In the end, I think its better to present the movie that has the most votes rather than poll questions that are designed to get a certain number of people to get all 30 answers right.
