The difference is that he is not really concerned with what he looks like, he is just concerned with being the person he believes he needs to be to be president. He is not a big fan of the fashion or the style, but he is concerned with his personality.

I think this is a great way to describe how we are so rarely in the know in our own personal lives, because we are rarely in the know about what we have done in the past, about whom we are going to be running for president. We may not even be aware of all our accomplishments, but we know they are important, and we are not going to be held in the past tense.
